Health workers say the displaced people are living with various skin diseases such as scabies and fungal infections

Sep 17, 2015- Hundreds of earthquake-hit people taking shelter in temporary camps have been suffering from various skin diseases in Ramechhap district.
The quake-affected people are infected with scabies, fungal infections and other skin diseases in district headquarters Manthali.
Dr Nabin Sinjali Magar of Manthali Primary Health Center said skin infection has been seen in people who are living in the camps.
“This season is also responsible to spread the skin diseases,” Magar said, adding that people living in vicinity also face the similar health problems.
There are several patients suffering from skin diseases in the camp. Health workers said some patients are found to be living with scabies and fungal infections.
Likewise, several patients suffering from skin diseases have received treatment in Tamakoshi Cooperative Hospital.
Dr Suman Karmacharya of the hospital said fungal infections are found inside shaded areas of the tent and transmitted to people living in the vicinity.
As the disease is communicable, it easily gets transmitted, he said.
The quake-displaced are also infected with diseases caused by mosquitoes and other insects in the tents. Meanwhile, many children in Dhading district developed skin infections.
Most of the children who came there from northern villages are facing difficulties adapting to warmer weather.
Likewise, some children are also suffering from diarrhoea, fever, cough and headache. There is no proper drainage system in the camps as they were built rather hastily to provide shelter to a large number of displaced families.

4 months after quakes, Nepal fails to spend any of $4.1 billion donor money

4 months after quakes, Nepal fails to spend any of $4.1 billion donor money
A woman walks past the debris of a collapsed house as she leaves a temple, months after two deadly earthquakes in Kathmandu, Nepal July 28, 2015.
KATHMANDU: Two months after foreign countries and international agencies pledged $4.1 billion to help Nepal recover from its worst natural disaster, the government has yet to make arrangements to receive the money and has spent nothing on reconstruction.

The United Nations estimates almost three million survivors of twin earthquakes in April and May – around 10 percent of the Himalayan nation’s population – need shelter, food and basic medical care, many in mountainous, hard-to-reach areas.

Govind Raj Pokharel, chief executive officer of the newly created National Reconstruction Authority, said the government was unlikely to start spending the money until October at the earliest because of delays in approving plans and concerns about starting building work in the monsoon season.

“The government’s response has been slow. I accept that,” said Pokharel.

Nepal has been criticised for its chaotic response to the quakes that killed almost 9,000 people. The country failed to adequately prepare even though experts had predicted an earthquake was likely. And then the government struggled to cope with relief.Four months later, many partially damaged buildings in Kathmandu are still standing and rubble is strewn across public parks. Tens of thousands of people are living in plastic tents, preyed upon by flies and mosquitoes, with muddy paths and no drains.

Maili Pariyar, 50, knitting a purse to sell outside her tent, said she only received food and tent materials from aid agencies. She has not been given anything by the government.

“We have lost everything. We are desperate,” she said. “How much longer do we have to wait for help?”

Pokharel said the government had failed to spend any money because ministers had still not signed off on rebuilding and aid distribution plans. He said the government made an error by attempting to pass a contentious constitution that will create a new political system and divide the country into new regions, a decision that has led to deadly clashes. The government argues the overhaul will help reconstruction in the long run by creating greater stability.

“We would have liked it if they concentrated on the reconstruction first,” Pokharel said. “That would have been better.”

Jamie McGoldrick, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nepal, said the government had been sluggish.

“The government needs to get going,” he said. “The next big challenge is to ensure that people living in tents are prepared for the winter.”After a two-month wait, Pokharel was appointed to head the reconstruction authority two weeks ago. He is now based in a government office that oversees printing because the earthquake damaged other buildings.”We have lost time and now we need to catch up,” he said.

Report on Post-Quake Nepal is Positive for Trekkers

Report on Post-Quake Nepal is Positive for Trekkers

Sometimes nature wreaks havoc, but sometimes the random violence of a natural disaster may leave some things in better order than before.

As improbable as it sounds, the government of Nepal is reporting that a study has shown that the earthquakes in April and May in Nepal left little damage to the Everest area and that some of the region is actually safer than before the earthquake. Perhaps, like the stock market, the land around Everest just needed an adjustment.

The report was given to the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Mr. Kripasur Sherpa on Aug. 7 and presented to the press and the public at a press conference in Kathmandu.

Intrepid Travel, the Petaluma, Calif.-based adventure tour operator, helped the government of Nepal to conduct the study of the area to determine how safe it is for travelers and trekkers.

Intrepid, which claims to be one of the largest trekking operators in Nepal, provided local guides to help the government with the logistics of carrying out the study of the new lay of the land in the Everest area.

With the beginning of the tourism season approaching, the report commissioned by the government of Nepal concluded that the earthquake left “minimal damage” to most of the trails and accommodations in the Everest region.

A team of engineers who specialize in geotechnical phenomena and structural concerns did an “initial rapid reconnaissance” and found some hazards that are being referred to as “minor.”

The report recommended re-routing part of the Everest trail and rebuilding and relocating some of the structures in the Tok Tok and Benkar villages.

An engineering report released by the government last month found “very little damage to the area in north-central Nepal. It found only 3 percent of buildings damaged by the earthquake" and those were assessed as “easily reparable.”

The reports identify hazards that were not results of the earthquakes, which will serve as guides to creating safer itineraries. The studies also offer suggestions as to how signage in the area can be improved.

Nine important bridges were assessed and no earthquake damage was discovered. More than 700 buildings in 15 villages were assessed and 83 percent of them were found to be safe and sound. Those that are damaged are seen to be reparable. And any rebuilding can be done using new technologies that will result in safer buildings in the long run.

More damage was found in the lower valley below Namche than in the upper valley. The engineers conducting the study recommended closing the trail around the Tok Tok and Benkar village and rerouting it to the opposite side of the Dhudh Kosi River.

The report recommends closing the low trail between the villages of Namche and Khumjung because of geological evidence that suggests that there is frequent rockfall on the low trail between the two villages.

The report also recommends avoiding overnight stays in Shomore until further assessments can be made as to the hazard of further rockfall in the area.

Darrell Wade, CEO and founder of Intrepid Travel, said, “As far as we’re concerned, the report is all good news, because even where it’s identified issues it means that we now have the information needed to rebuild Nepal stronger than ever before, and ensure the safety of our staff, travelers, and the local communities we visit.”

For the country of Nepal, the news is positive because tourism is vital to the economic health of the region.

“Tourism is the largest employer in Nepal and it’s vital to our economic recovery,” said Ramesh Kumar Adhikari, administrative chief of the Nepal Tourism Board “We know that Everest is a huge draw for visitors – it is a bucket list destination,”
