Earthquake causes massive damages to BP Museum
4 June, Sundarijal : The historic BP Museum in Sundarijal has suffered damages equivalent to Rs 40 million in the April 25 major earthquake and two powerful aftershocks that were felt on the following day and May 12.
A team comprising lawmaker Ram Chandra Pokhrel, former lawmaker and Nepali Congress leader Purushottam Basnet, Rastriya Samachar Samiti ( RSS) Chairman Kulchandra Wagle and Nepal Press Union former president Murari Sharma on Thursday visited the site to take its post-earthquake stock. On the occasion, they were updated about damages inflicted on the museum by its president Parashuram Pokhrel.
Museum’s boundary wall, buildings and other outer infrastructures were damaged by the earthquake. A technical team from the Department of Tourism, the subordinate body of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, that had been earlier in the site to study about damages calculated the loss equivalent to Rs 40 million.
The museum that had been once used as an arsenal during the Rana regime, was transformed into a prison house during the rule of King Mahendra where then political leaders BP Koirala, Ganeshman Singh, Yogendraman Sherchan, Diwansingh Rai, Ram Naryan Mishra, Surya Prasad Upadhyay and Premraj Angdembe were put into confinement as political prisoners in 2033 BS. It was converted into a museum in 2061 BS. RSS
