Culture and religion in Kirtipur
Culture and religion in Kirtipur
Within the society of Kirtipur traditions and cultures are still alive as hundreds of years before having their roots within the Newar-culture as well as in the Hinduism and Buddhist religions of the Newar casts. Hinduism and Buddhism do not only exist harmoniously and peaceful in Kirtipur but regardless of their religion people are worshipping all temples, shrines and gods nearly equally.

Every morning just after sunrise the women of Kirtipur are going from temple to temple and from shrine to shrine to worship the Gods with a puja.

During "Tihar" this women is pre-paring a "path" for Lakshmi, Goddess of Wealth to find her way into the house.Holy mandala-stones like this one, also called "Lakshmi's footprint", can bee seen in front of nearly every house. Also here every morning a puja will be celebrated. The religion demands from the citizens to celebrate a ritual clean up of the shrines and temples in their local district (tole) from time to time with the assistance of a priest.
