US urges constitution on broadest consensus possible

US - Nepal

Sep 15, 2015- The United States has said that the constitution process was a chance for the Nepali people to cement Nepal’s democratic transition and provide the foundation for economic development.
In a statement issued the US embassy in Kathmandu, the US hopes that the constitution embraces the creativity, inclusiveness, and flexibility that will build a peaceful and prosperous Nepal. “The constitution should have the broadest possible support and the outcome should honour fundamental rights such as gender equality and basic freedoms,” the statement reads.
Stating that the US is closely following the debate on the final stages of constitution drafting, the statement urges the Nepali citizen to engage through peaceful, non-violent means, and call on the Nepali security forces to exercise restraint in responding to protests.
