Two former IGs convicted on Sudan Scam sent to jail

Two former IGs convicted on Sudan Scam sent to jail 
Two former Inspector Generals of Nepal Police, who were found guilty on the high-profile Sudan Scam, have been sent to jail on Wednesday.

Former IGs Om Bikram Rana and Hem Bahadur Gurung had surrendered themselves to the Supreme Court this afternoon, informed spokesperson of the SC Mahendra Upadhayaya. Later, the court sent them to Dillibazar-based central jail.

The Apex Court on April 30 had issued a verdict sending three former IGs of Nepal Police and other police officers of various ranks behind bars.

The SC had slapped two years jail sentence and Rs 50,000 fine to former IG Om Bikram Rana while it ordered Rs 40,000 fine and one year prison term to former IGs Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chandra Thakuri.

The court had also slapped one year prison and Rs 40,000 fine on then Additional Inspector General (AIGs) Shyam Singh Thapa and Deepak Singh Thangden. Then DIG Deep Kumar Shrestha and then SSP Ravi Pratap Rana have also been handed six-month jail sentence and Rs 30,000.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sushila Karki and Justice Bishwomber Prasad Shrestha had passed the final judgment on the case pertaining to embezzlement of state funds during the procurement of Armed Personnel Carriers and other equipment meant for Nepali peacekeepers in Sudan.

The bench found them guilty of purchasing obsolete and sub-standard armoured vehicles for Nepali UN peacekeepers.
