Ashmita Giri is originally from Dubochaur, Sindhupalchowk. She is a 13 years old, class 4 student of a school that is half an hour walk from her house. Studying is her obsession and she is one of the brightest students of her class who managed to stand first in her class last year. All her teachers are very fond of her.
On 25th April Ashmita was washing the dishes of the morning meal outside of her house when the deadly earthquake struck. Her 16 years old sister was with her and since nobody else was home that day, they realized that her 7 years old sister was indoors all by herself. While the ground was still shaking, they both rushed to rescue their youngest sister who was trapped in the fallen walls of their house. In their attempt to save her, both Ashmita and her elder sister were badly injured. But despite putting their lives at stake, the youngest sister died on the spot.
Ashmita’s father is a farmer while her mother is a housewife. With the desire to have a son, the poor mother, on the pressure of her husband persistently gave birth to six daughters. The eldest and the one next to her are already married while the rest of the four lived with their parents in gruesome poverty. Regardless of the hardships, all four managed to attend schools and were brilliant in studies. The brightest of them all, was their youngest daughter. Not only the earthquake took away all they had, but also took the life of their beloved daughter. She was the apple of everyone’s eyes and had a bright future ahead of her. Sadly, she had to leave this world without having to live much.
Ashmita has broken her leg and hand. Since she loves reading, the nurses in the clinic have provided her with many books which she fondly indulges in. Her elder sister who was injured with her was admitted in another hospital. She smiles faintly while speaking and when asked if the wounds still hurt her, she says ‘no’. The sisters at Maiti Nepal are taking a really good care of me and I feel at home, is what she had to say when asked about how she feels about coming to Maiti.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, 20th May, her mother had come to visit her. Tears of joy rolled through her cheeks. Having being bed ridden for weeks, she told her mother about how much she wanted to go out and play. Her mother thanked Maiti Nepal for the affection it has given to her daughter. She is hopeful about her and also conveyed Ashmita’s love for books and what a good student she is in school. Ashmita is gradually getting better and in few days, she will get rid of the plasters too. Becoming an engineer is what she dreams of, and Maiti Nepal will try its level best and help her to achieve what she aspires for.
